Background

Sea levels are rising, and this rise has accelerated in recent decades due to climate change and global warming. The future trajectory of this accelerated rise remains uncertain. In the long term, sea-level rise could have major consequences for the liveability and habitability of the Netherlands.

Through the Sea Level Rise Knowledge Programme, government bodies, businesses, research institutions, and civil society organizations are investigating the potential impacts of sea-level rise on the country. The programme generates the knowledge needed to make timely decisions regarding the protection and spatial planning of the Netherlands.

The final results were delivered in 2026. This website summarizes those findings. The key outcomes of the Sea Level Rise Knowledge Programme can be found here.
